THE HISTORY OF BUKITTINGGI



The city has its origins in five villages which served as the basis for a marketplace. In 1825, Netherland set up stronghold of defense, which until now these stronghold of defense still exist and are known as Fort De Kock. 



The city has been used also by the Netherlands as a resting place officers in the colonies. In 1856 a teacher training college (Kweekschool) was established as part of a policy to provide educational opportunities for the indigenous population. Then, a railway line that connects with Payakumbuh Bukittinggi and Padang was built between 1891 and 1894.

In the goverment of Japan, the Bukittinggi serve as the military government's control center for the region of Sumatra, even down to Singapore and Thailand, because here a resident commander of the military to 25. At this time Bukittinggi renamed from Taddsgemente Fort de Kock became Bukittinggi The Yaku Sho, whose land was broadened to include Nagari-Nagari Sianok, Gadut, Kapau, Ampang Gadang, Batu Taba and Bukit batabuah, and them now in Agam District. During the independence struggle of Indonesia, Bukitinggi role as the city struggles. From December 1948 until June 1949, Bukittinggi was appointed as the capital of the Emergency Government of the Republic of Indonesia (PDRI) after Yogyakarta fell into Netherlands hands. Furthermore, once the capital of Bukittinggi Sumatra province with a governor Mr. Tengku Muhammad Hasan. Later in the PP Substitute legislation No. 4 in 1959, Bukittinggi established as the capital of Central Sumatra-residency that includes residencies, West Sumatra, Jambi and Riau are now each residency has become its own province.

In October 2007 A group of Muslim men had planned to bomb a cafe in the city frequented by foreign tourists, but the plot was aborted due to the risk of killing Muslim individuals in the vicinity. Since 2008 the city administration has banned Valentine's Day and New Year's celebrations as they consider them not in line with Minangkabau traditions or Islam, and can lead to "immoral acts" such as young couples hugging, kissing and not to mention fornicating.
